The Blackhawks team made its original appearance in another Quality title, Military Comics in August 1941. Military Comics ran for 43 issues and was renamed Modern Comics with issue #44 (Nov 1945). In the meantime, the Blackhawks also began to appear in this, their own title. The numbering took over from a cancelled Quarterly title, Uncle Sam Quarterly, that had rUn for 8 issues. The first nine Blackhawk issues, #9-18, were published quarterly but then from issue #19 until #33 (Oct 1950) the series was published every two months.

With the end of Modern Comics (#102), also in Oct 1950, the Blackhawks were making one less comic appearance, so from #34 the Blackhawk title went monthly until its last issue (#107) in December 1956. By this time Quality had folded and their titles acquired by National Periodical Publications (later DC). DC continued the title, without a break, from issue #108 (Jan 1957) and it ran for a number of years after that.
